TRAVEL SOCCER FAQs:1. What is the time commitment?
Typically practices occur twice per week for 1 – 1.5 hours. Practice days & locations are chosen by your coach. Games are played on Sundays with start times of 12pm or later. The season lasts 7-8 weeks with the potential for one tournament per season. If games are required to be rescheduled, the make-up games will occur during the week.
2. How far will I travel for away games?
Most away games are within an hour drive. Most teams will have an even split of home and away games.
3. What is the cost?
The cost of travel is equivalent to in-house registration. Travel players are required to purchase a travel kit at an initial additional expense of approximately $120. The player will be able to wear the kit until he/she outgrows it or the league changes the uniform standard. The uniform kit implemented in the Fall 2025 will remain the standard for the Fall 2026 / Spring 2027 seasons. One tournament registration expense is covered by CMYSA. If a team chooses to play in more than one tournament per season, the family will be responsible for registration fees.
4. What if my player also wants to play in-house CMYSA?
Travel players have the option to play on an available CMYSA in-house team free of charge in addition to playing CMYSA Travel Soccer.
5. Do Travel Players participate in tournaments?
CMYSA Travel Teams may participate in one tournament per season with registration expenses covered by CMYSA. Season tournaments are spread throughout the year and vary in location. Some tournaments will have two days of bracket play followed by a third day of playoff games. Tournaments are not mandatory and will be presented to the team by your coach. Tournament registration expenses are covered by CMYSA unless a team chooses to play in more than one tournament per season.
6. Is travel soccer the same as club/cup soccer?
This is a step between club/cup level (Beadling, Century, RDA, ect) and in-house CMYSA. Travel is for players looking to increase their skills & grow their talent through exposure to other community’s players while also building unit cohesion for the middle and high school program.
7. What if my player will not be playing in the Fall/Spring season?
There is an option within registration to indicate your player’s season preference, as well as indicating both seasons. Your player is expected to attend travel evaluations regardless of what season he/she will play to ensure appropriate placement onto a team.
8. What is the benefit of travel soccer vs. in-house soccer?
CMYSA serves a large enough community allowing us to offer varying levels of competition. Stepping into travel soccer is for players who are looking to build their skills through multiple practices per week as well as being exposed to players from other school districts in a more competitive atmosphere. Travel is a good fit for players looking to grow their soccer skills and who hope to continue playing through middle school, high school & even at a collegiate level.
9. Who can attend travel evaluations?
Your player MUST be registered through the CMYSA website to attend travel evaluations and fall in the age group matrix above.
10. What if we decide to not play travel following evaluations?
If after evaluations your player decides against playing travel soccer your registration fee can transfer to a CMYSA in-house registration.
11. When will I know my player’s travel eligibility?
Travel notifications are blacked out until June 29. Team notifications will start June 30.
12. How are teams created?
The CMYSA Travel Committee will utilize the evaluation scores of each player to create the most competitive team for each skill level within the PA West designated age group.
13. How are coaches chosen for CMYSA Travel Teams?
Coaches are on a volunteer basis similar to in-house. The difference is coaches are required to have a PA West approved license in order to coach at the travel level.
All coaches must also be approved by the CMYSA Board and PA West.
14. Is it possible for a travel player to be in multiple sports in the same season as travel soccer?
CMYSA supports all multi-sport athletes and currently has several enrolled in our travel program. We do ask you notify your coach of the multi-sport commitment and provide advance warning of any practice & game conflicts.
15. My player has never played soccer should he/she come to travel evaluations?
While we recommend your first soccer experience to be at an in-house level, we encourage all eligible players to attend travel evaluations and will provide direction for your player’s placement at the close of evaluations.
16. Does CMYSA cut players from travel teams?
CMYSA makes every effort to find a best fit team for every player who attends evaluations. Unfortunately, there are not always enough players to form a full team at your player’s skill level. In addition, PA West regulates roster space on travel teams which can limit the number of players permitted on a team. In order to provide all players the best experience to build their skills, CMYSA offers in-house option.
17. Are there different levels of competition in Travel?
Yes, teams are broken into 3 divisions. Teams are often relegated or promoted in the spring based on their performance in the fall. See below for the divisions specific to CMYSA.
Division 6: This is one step up from in house. CMYSA will compete within the PA West South Region. Generally, there are more than 150 teams in division 6 containing players from U9 to U18.
Division 5: This is one step up from Division 6 and represents one bracket per age group at most. CMYSA will compete within PA West South and potentially a few other teams from neighboring regions will join to even out the brackets. Most of these teams are dominating Division 6 and want a higher challenge to gauge their competitiveness before stepping up to Division 4.
Division 4: This is the maximum competitive level obtainable for travel soccer. CMYSA will compete with teams across the entirety of PA West. These teams are comprised of seasoned soccer players with most of the team participating in club/cup soccer. Rarely will U13 and older age groups have Division 4 brackets. At this level, extracurricular activities become too demanding for players and player parents.
